The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey, wrote courageously in the Mail in support of the institution of marriage, and warned about the implications of plans to legalise gay marriage.
He decided to speak out after it became clear that David Cameron was happy to see the law changed. Lord Carey said that marriage is one of the most important aspects of our culture, and that any change in its status would ‘constitute one of the greatest political power grabs in history’.
The former archbishop argued that marriage would only remain the fundamental bedrock of our stable society if it was a union between a man and a woman.
He emphasised that he was not opposed to civil partnerships and, in fact, had personally supported them.
I, too, have attended many civil partnership ceremonies and several of my gay friends are as bewildered as the former archbishop by the Prime Minister’s zeal for extending marriage to gays.
I fear that Mr Cameron’s position is just another typically cynical exercise to try to rebrand the Tory Party.
